The head of regulatory compliance for Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) has departed to join the Bitcoin Mercantile Exchange (BitMEX) as its new chief operating officer.
Angelina Kwan will be responsible for overseeing and driving growth at BitMEX, as well as guiding it through the development of products for the global cryptocurrency industry.
She has more than 24 years of experience working across the financial services, operations and regulatory strategy in the US and Asia-Pacific.
Since 2015, Kwan has worked at HKEX as a managing director and head of regulatory compliance. She also spent eight years with the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) in Hong Kong.
Arthur Hayes, CEO and co-founder of BitMEX, commented that welcoming Kwan with experience in both traditional finance and regulation, is a milestone not just for BitMEX, but for the cryptocurrency industry as a whole.
“I believe [Kwan’s] decision to join us is a signal that the global markets are shifting focus to the rapidly-expanding domain of crypto-coins. [Kwan’s] vast experience in regulation, trading platforms, business development, restructuring, and investor and stakeholder relations will be pivotal as we continue the push towards mainstream cryptocurrency adoption and broaden our community.”
BitMEX recently broke an industry record for 24-hour Bitcoin trading volume on two separate occasions in the third quarter this year. The exchange said that it will continue to adapt and onboard new investors to crypto markets.
“My most memorable accomplishments – from successfully restructuring and relisting a bankrupt financial services company, spearheading the establishment of new operations or companies, to serving on a number of boards and committees – have been joining organisations that are at the cusp of making a major breakthrough, so it’s with a sense of great excitement that I take on the challenge of driving BitMEX to new market heights,” Kwan concluded.
